Barge-In (Interrupting a Voice Agent)
Barge-in is a voice agent's ability to detect that the caller has started speaking while the agent is still talking, stop its own audio immediately, and process what the caller said, so the person can interrupt the way they would with a human.
The term comes from IVR systems, where barge-in let a caller press a key or say an option before the menu finished. In a conversational voice agent it is harder, because the agent must listen while it speaks (full duplex), tell the difference between a real interruption and background noise or a short 'aha', cut the text-to-speech stream within a fraction of a second, and discard the rest of the reply it was about to give. It then has to work out what the caller reacted to: if the agent was listing three time slots and the caller said 'the second one', the agent needs to know how far it had got.
Arabic phone conversations make barge-in essential rather than optional. Callers in Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Egypt overlap naturally, confirm with 'أيوه' or 'تمام' mid-sentence, and will cut a long answer short as soon as they have what they need. An agent that cannot be interrupted forces the caller to wait through a full paragraph, then repeat themselves, which is the moment most people hang up or demand a human. At the same time, over-sensitive barge-in is just as bad: a car horn or a child in the background stops the agent mid-word and the call becomes a series of restarts.
Nano AI's voice agents are tuned to stop and listen when a caller speaks over them, with thresholds set to ignore short acknowledgements and background noise, and this behaviour is part of the live test before any agent goes into production. The vendor check is simple: call the demo line, let the agent begin a long answer, interrupt in dialect with a new question, and see whether it stops cleanly and answers the new question or keeps talking. Then try the same call from a noisy street.
