AI Citation

An AI citation is a reference to your page or brand in an answer from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot or Google AI Overviews, as a link or a named mention. Unlike a ranking there is no fixed list; the model picks a few sources per answer.

Rankings and citations are produced by different processes. A search ranking is a position on a results page for a query, determined by an index and a ranking system, and it is relatively stable and measurable. A citation happens when an answer engine retrieves candidate pages (often through a live web search), reads them, composes an answer, and attaches the sources it drew from. The same question asked twice can cite different pages; a page ranked fifth can be cited while the page ranked first is not, because the model picked the passage that answered most directly.

Why it matters for a business in the Gulf or Egypt: a growing share of 'which company should I use for X in Riyadh' questions are now asked to a chat assistant rather than typed into a search box, and the assistant's answer names three or four options. If you are not among them you are invisible for that query, regardless of where you rank. Arabic queries add a twist: the model may search in English, read English sources, and answer in Arabic, so having both languages on the same entity with consistent facts increases the chance of being picked either way.

What earns citations, based on how these systems work rather than on any guaranteed formula: pages that state the answer in the first two sentences; specific, verifiable facts (published prices, named integrations, dates) instead of marketing adjectives; clear entity identity across the site and third-party profiles; and mentions on directories, comparison pages and publications the engines already retrieve. Tracking is done by asking a fixed set of questions to each engine on a schedule and recording which sources appear. Nano AI runs this kind of answer-engine audit as part of its GEO work and publishes its own prices partly for this reason: a model can only cite a fact that exists on the page.
